How's this for an unusual mix? Microsoft this morning rolled out an online campaign with the dual goal of building buzz for Internet Explorer 8 and fighting hunger -- accompanied by online videos starring actor Dean Cain and comedian Bobcat Goldthwait.
Yes, we're still trying to wrap our heads around it, too. The gist is that the company's "Browser for the Better" initiative will donate eight meals to the Feeding America organization for every copy of Internet Explorer 8 downloaded through the campaign's Web site.
The spoof videos, also available on the campaign site, feature Cain talking about various Internet "afflictions" that are solved by new Internet Explorer 8 features. Goldthwait plays the role of director. The company had previously used a more subtle approach to build buzz for the browser.
Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 in March, but Firefox has continued to make gains, according to data from the Net Applications research firm. Microsoft's Internet Explorer market share stood at 65.5 percent in May, down from more than 67 percent in February.
