Just days after Amazon.com started shipping its new electronic reader, the Kindle DX, the device is listed as sold out, at least briefly. The Kindle DX web page says the reader will be back in stock on June 17. Amazon started shipping Kindle DX on June 10.
Amazon has sold out of previous versions of the Kindle, leading to speculation that it's intentionally manipulating supply to generate buzz about the reader. Amazon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Amazon is promoting the new large-screen Kindle DX as a replacement for printed newspapers and college textbooks.
Update: I asked Amazon for more details about the Kindle DX supply issues. Here's a statement I received Monday from Amazon spokeswoman Cinthia Portugal:
Due to heavy customer demand, new orders placed today will begin shipping to those customers in approximately 2 days. We will prioritize new orders on a first-come, first-served basis, so customers interested in buying a Kindle DX should still order immediately to reserve their place in line. Our 6-inch Kindle remains in stock and is available for immediately delivery.
