Microsoft today confirmed that Windows 7, the next version of its flagship operating system, will be generally available Oct. 22 in stores and on new computers. The news answers one of the last remaining questions about the next Windows version.
The company says there will be a technology guarantee program helping smooth the transition to Windows 7 for people who buy new computers for some specified period prior to the release. Details of that program have not yet been announced.
Microsoft is looking to Windows 7 to help it overcome the struggles of Windows Vista, released in January 2007. The tech industry in general is hoping that the new operating system will provide a bright spot in the troubled economy.
One key to Windows 7's fate will be its level of compatibility with devices and software upon launch. Compatibility problems plagued Windows Vista's release, leading to a negative reputation that has persisted despite updates that have improved the operating system.
