Numbers released by the comScore market research firm this morning confirm that Microsoft's new Bing search engine has boosted the company's position in the Internet search market. But the question remains: Is it a temporary blip or a lasting trend?
Microsoft's "average daily penetration" among searchers in the U.S. rose to 15.5 percent after Bing's release (June 2-6) from 13.8 percent previously (May 26-30), according to the comScore data. Meanwhile, the company's "share of search results pages" rose in the same time frame to 11.1 percent, from 9.1 percent previously.
The comScore report, described as a preliminary study, did not include data for Google or Yahoo. The research firm's monthly numbers are typically based on a different measure -- share of search queries. Microsoft was previously hovering just above 8 percent, compared to more than 64 percent for Google.
Early numbers last week from StatCounter showed Microsoft edging out Yahoo for the No. 2 position worldwide, although the Redmond company has since slipped back to No. 3 in those standings.
