Congratulations Seattle. We're now the second geekiest city in the country.
The Seattle-Bellevue-Everett metro area has moved ahead of Boston to claim the title as the number two technology region in North America, according to a report released by the Milken Institute this week. The report -- which ranked the regions by wages, employment and other factors -- gave Seattle a total score of 46.4 points. That was just ahead of Boston, which scored 45.2 points.Silicon Valley remained in the top post, with a score of 100.
Here's the breakdown for Seattle, which showed high-tech jobs of 226,341. The region also was helped since Milken included aerospace jobs -- a category in which Seattle ranked second. It placed first in software publishing, and ninth in telecommunications.
Portland moved up one slot to 27th in the ranking, while Boise lost five spots to finish at 65th.
Seattle tech watchers have long wanted to position the city as the second most powerful technology region, anchored by companies such as Amazon.com, Expedia and Microsoft.
The Milken report analyzed the top 393 metro areas in North America. And what city finished last?
That would be Springfield, Ohio. I've spent a decent amount of time in Springfield, since it is home of Wittenberg University where my brother attended college.
Let's just say I am glad to be in Seattle.
Anyway, what do you think of the ranking? And is there anything the Seattle tech community should be doing to elevate its standing?
UPDATE: As the P-I's Monica Guzman points out, the Milken study contrasts with a recent report by American City Business Journals (publisher of TechFlash) that shows Seattle in the fifth slot for tech hubs. She asks: How techie are we?
