The Disney Interactive Media Group has reorganized its engineering operations in Seattle, resulting in a small number of people losing their jobs. Company spokeswoman Brandy Phillips said that the company has focused efforts around two primary engineering groups: platforms and media.
Disney has maintained a strong technical presence in Seattle since the days of Starwave, which operated early versions of Web sites such as ESPN.com, NBA.com and ABC.com. About 400 people remain in the Seattle offices.
Phillips declined to say how many people were let go, though she said it was a small number and that the company remains very much committed to Seattle. In late 2007, the company hired Bud Albers -- the former CTO at Getty Images, MusicNet and drugstore.com -- to lead the technical operations of the company.
The Seattle unit provides the back-end technical operations that power Disney's growing line-up of digital media properties, including ESPN.com, Club Penguin and ToonTown.
