There's more decent news for the personal-computer market today, following Intel's strong quarterly earnings report yesterday. The IDC research firm reported a 3.1 percent decline in worldwide PC shipments for the second quarter, reflecting continued weakness in the economy. However, the research firm noted that the result was considerably better than the 6.3 percent decline it had been expecting.
The news is encouraging for Microsoft, which relies heavily on PC sales to drive its Windows revenue. The Redmond company reports quarterly and fiscal year-end earnings July 23, next Thursday.
Here's an IDC chart showing how the major PC vendors fared in the U.S. market for the quarter. The numbers are preliminary and are likely to be adjusted after some of the companies report earnings. Apple, for example, issues its numbers next Tuesday, July 21.
