Intuit, maker of Quicken and TurboTax software, is taking the wraps off its new internet data center in the central Washington town of Quincy. Intuit began looking at Quincy more than two years ago. It joins Microsoft and Yahoo, which already have data centers in the area, drawn by the cheap land and hydroelectric power and fiber optic lines.
The Port of Quincy is planning a ceremonial grand opening for the Intuit data center on Aug. 13. The completion of the Intuit project is good news for Quincy, which has seen Microsoft and Yahoo scale back some of their ambitious data center plans in the area.
The Grant County Economic Development Council on its website says the Intuit data center is expected to generate 38 jobs (the Microsoft and Yahoo data centers account for 50 jobs a piece). Ask.com also has a data center in nearby Moses Lake.
Intuit got a boost this summer when Microsoft said it will stop selling its Microsoft Money personal finance software, which competes with Quicken.
