Frank Shaw, the longtime president of the Microsoft account at public-relations firm Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, will be joining Microsoft's executive ranks as the company's new corporate vice president of corporate communications. He is replacing Simon Sproule, a former Nissan executive who has decided to return to the auto industry after five months with the Redmond software company.
That's an unsually short tenure for Sproule, who came to the company with a reputation for stirring up buzz through PR gimmicks. Sproule is going to Paris to work as an executive with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. People at Microsoft say Sproule's heart was in the auto industry.
Waggener Edstrom is Microsoft's primary public-relations agency. The Microsoft account will be led on an interim basis by agency co-founder and executive vice president Pam Edstrom, according to a statement this morning from Melissa Waggener Zorkin, Waggener Edstrom's CEO and founder.
The Microsoft corporate communications position was previously held by Larry Cohen, who left last year to become Bill Gates' chief of staff, following the Microsoft chairman's departure from daily life at the company.
Shaw, who announced his move on his blog this morning, will be making the shift to Microsoft at the end of August. He will report to Mich Mathews, senior vice president for Microsoft's Central Marketing Group.
