Following Microsoft's release Monday of Service Pack 2 for Mac Office 2008, we received a message from a reader explaining that the update prevented him from opening PowerPoint files previously saved with the ".pptx" extension. Looking at the MacFixIt forums, other people are having the same problems, and Microsoft's Mac Business Unit is now acknowledging the issue.
“The MacBU is aware that some users are experiencing a PowerPoint file format issue following the download of Office 2008 for Mac SP2," a company representative said late yesterday in response to our inquiry. "The team is working to correct the issue and will share updates accordingly.”
Presumably there will be a follow-up update once they resolve the issue. In the meantime, here's hoping no Mac users have a critical business presentation that relies on a previously saved PowerPoint file.
Changes in Service Pack 2 included the ability to create custom motion-path animations inside presentations. Previously, Mac Office users were able to view animations created by Windows PowerPoint users, but they weren't able to create them. The update also let Mac PowerPoint users set custom default themes.
