Nintendo's market-leading Wii video-game console had the top three video games in the U.S. in the first half of 2009, according to the latest data from the NPD market research firm. But it's also worth noting that Microsoft's Xbox 360 had five of the top 10 titles, most of them from third-party game developers. Games for Sony's PlayStation 3 claimed the remaining two spots. Here's the list.
1) Wii Fit: 3 million
2) Wii Play: 1.5 million
3) Mario Kart Wii: 1.4 million
4) Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360): 1.1 million
5) UFC 2009 Undisputed (Xbox 360): 1 million
6) Call of Duty World at War (Xbox 360): 788,597
7) Halo Wars (Xbox 360): 761,232
8) Killzone 2 (PS3): 734,392
9) Resident Evil 5 (PS3): 721,756
10) Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360): 636,467
The list also shows how much the Microsoft and Sony consoles remain dependent on hard-core games, even as Nintendo continues to broaden the market with titles meant to appeal to a larger cross-section of the population. That's something Microsoft is aiming to change through, among other things, its Project Natal motion-sensing technology.
