Microsoft Bing courts iPhone, Mac developers with search tools |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Microsoft's Bing isn't one of the native search engines available inside the iPhone, but the Redmond company this morning released a new software development kit to help third-party iPhone and Mac developers use the search engine inside their applications.
The technology, available under an Microsoft Public License, was announced this morning on the Bing developer blog. It works in conjunction with the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch programming environments that can be used to write Mac and iPhone applications. As explained on the Bing blog, the idea behind the new Microsoft SDK is to make it easier to program Mac and iPhone applications to query Bing for websites, images, videos, and other items.
Microsoft walks a fine line with projects such as this, because its Windows Mobile initiative competes with the iPhone and other mobile platforms. At the same time, the company is doing everything it can to increase Bing's market share, which was up slightly in the U.S. last month. Google is the default search in Safari on the iPhone, although users can change the engine to Yahoo from the device's settings.
