Microsoft and mobile phone giant Nokia just scheduled a news conference for Wednesday morning in New York City, where they say they will announce an alliance. The companies aren't yet providing any details, but CNet News.com reports that they will be working to put Microsoft's Office software on Nokia phones.
Supporting that report, the executives who will be participating are Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft Business Division; and Kai Oistamo, executive vice president for Nokia Devices. The company's Windows Mobile unit, which competes with Nokia's Symbian operating system, isn't mentioned as part of the announcement.
As Ina Fried of CNet News reports, Microsoft Office documents can be viewed on a variety of mobile phones, but native versions of the Office software have been limited to phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.
Depending on how things shake out, it could be a banner week for Office on mobile devices. Microsoft's Mac Business Unit, which makes Office for Apple computers, has scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning, amid speculation that it could be developing an Office app for Apple's iPhone.
Stay tuned for coverage of both announcements later this week.
