The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today that Blair Westlake, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Media & Entertainment Group, will serve as "gala chair" for the upcoming International Emmy Awards in November in New York City. Sorry this doesn't mean you can blame Microsoft if "Lost" doesn't win Best Drama. That would be the Primetime Emmy Awards. The International Emmy Awards recognizes programming produced outside the United States.
No surprise here, but Microsoft isn't exactly sounding scared -- at least not publicly -- by Sony's move last week to slim down the the PlayStation 3 and cut the price by $100 to $299. Ars Technica today quotes Microsoft offering the obligatory unimpressed statements, such as "A smaller console size does not necessarily mean more value for consumers," and "Starting at $199, Xbox 360 offers the best gaming and entertainment experience at the most consumer-friendly price on the market." Still waiting on that rumored $299 Xbox 360 Elite.
Microsoft today said it will end, in a week, the special pricing for Windows 7 that allowed European consumers to preorder the full version of the upcoming operating system for an upgrade price. That pricing was established when Microsoft was planning to offer Windows 7 in Europe without a browser, to address antitrust concerns. Since then, the company has proposed a browser "ballot" instead, making it possible to offer an actual upgrade. Europe will also now get Windows 7 Family Pack, the company said. Details here.
A sighting of an "Apps" menu item on a Zune HD has caused a stir on the gadget blogs, but Microsoft isn't going into any real detail about its plans, reports CNet News.com's Ina Fried. Separately, as we reported earlier today, the speculation that Microsoft's OneApp offering would be a combined Windows Mobile-Zune application platform turned out to be false.
Yahoo today introduced new search features, making it clear that it plans to continue to make innovations in its user interface even if it's able to complete the proposed search and advertising partnership that would have Microsoft Bing provide the underlying technology.
