Microsoft quickly apologized yesterday for the incident in which the head of a black man was swapped for that of a white man in a marketing photo on the website of its Polish subsidiary. That isn't stopping it from becoming international news. And it definitely isn't stopping people from having fun with the situation.
TechCrunch has declared the whole thing an official Internet meme and launched a Photoshop contest, inviting readers to submit their own alternative versions of the photo -- starting with one (pictured here) featuring Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
Meanwhile, the reactions to the incident continue to roll in, with the site Soft Sailor calling it "The Biggest Racist Photoshop Disaster Ever," and Consumerist mocking Microsoft Poland's "Hilariously Bad Photoshop Skills." Tech pundit David Coursey agrees with that sentiment in this commentary: Microsoft Guilty of Bad Photoshop Use, Not Racism.
To make matters worse for Microsoft, it looks like one of the computers in the image may have been a Mac, barely disguised.
For the record, the Photoshopped image has been replaced with the original photo on the Microsoft Poland site. Here's a comparison of the two, as captured yesterday by CNet News.com's Ina Fried.
