Obama's summer books get big sales bump on Amazon.com
President Obama's summer reading list is sparking a frenzy on Amazon.com. The five books that Obama chose for his vacation to Martha's Vineyard -- "The Way Home" by George Pelecanos, "The Lush Life" by Richard Price, "Hot, Flat and Crowded" by Tom Friedman, "John Adams" by David McCullough, and "Plainsong" by Kent Haruf -- are enjoying a big sales bounce, reports Politico, which writes that the president's golden touch with books makes him "the new Oprah Winfrey."
According to Politico:
"The Way Home" shot up to No. 328 on Amazon.com's Best Seller list Tuesday from No. 33,349 when Obama's list was first announced Monday. The others followed suit. "A Lush Life"? From No. 74,289 to No. 10,295 on Wednesday. "Hot, Flat and Crowded"? From No. 231 to No. 41 on Wednesday. "John Adams"? No. 14,301 to No. 7,067 on Wednesday. And "Plainsong" rocketed to to as high as No. 189 from its Monday position of No. 8,155.
Politico notes that with the reappointment of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and Sen. Ted Kennedy's death (not to mention the fact that the president would have to read 300 pages a day to get through the books on vacation), Obama "may not actually makes as big of a dent in those tomes as he'd like." But the website says Americans "may pick up the slack for him," based on the books' sales numbers.
