I've been getting bombarded today with press releases from companies touting their inclusion in the Inc. 5,000, the recently expanded list of the country's fastest growing privately-held companies.
By my count, 107 Washington companies made the Inc. 5,000 list this year. That compares to 612 California companies (the leading state), 74 Oregon companies and 14 Idaho companies.
For the second year in a row, Kirkland business consulting shop Revel Consulting took home the top honors in Washington state with a 3-year revenue growth rate of 3,531 percent. Revel -- which ranked 34th overall and first in the business services category -- posted revenue of $13.2 million last year.
With 37 employees, Revel said they've been able to grow the 7-year-old business by creating an "Ideas Lab" where consultants are responsible for developing new service areas in a bottom-up approach.
Other Washington companies that made it in the top 500 (I limited it to 500 given that 5,000 is just too overwhelming) included Xtreme Consulting (#41), Clarisonic (#60), Visible Technologies (#170), Big Fish Games (#252), Winshuttle (#290) and Tableau Software (#400).
You can see the full list of the Washington companies here. It's also cool to sort the list by revenue, so you can see the biggest privately-held companies in the state. They include Vertafore at $270 million, The Cobalt Group at $227 million (Editor's note: Inc. did not report Cobalt's revenue accurately and the post has been updated to reflect their 2008 revenue) and Intelius at $122 million -- though none even come close to the top 10 in total revenue nationwide where the thresh-hold was a cool $2 billion.
The fastest-growing company overall was Miami-based Northern Capital Insurance, which posted a 3-year revenue growth rate of 19,812.
Here's a look at the 18 companies in Washington state that made the Inc. 500 list, determined by 3-year revenue growth. See any surprises?
