Stephenson
Chris Stephenson, a music industry veteran who joined Microsoft in 2006 to help lead the launch of its Zune music player, plans to leave the company for a position at Universal Music Group, the Wall Street Journal reports today. The news comes as the company prepares for the Sept. 15 launch of the Zune HD, the next generation of Microsoft's iPod challenger.
The Wall Street Journal reports that it confirmed the news with Stephenson via phone. He's expected to become chief marketing officer at Interscope Geffen A&M Records, part of Universal, after Labor Day. We've asked Microsoft for comment, and for information on any plans to replace Stephenson inside the company, and we'll update this post depending on the response.
Stephenson led the unveiling of the original Zune at a media event in Redmond in 2006, where his offhanded remarks in response to questions about a Zune phone fueled years of speculation about the possibility, none of which has come to fruition. Initial impressions of the Zune HD have been favorable, but Apple's iPod touch has the advantage of also working with iPhone apps.
