One of the bigger pieces of news out of Apple's media briefing today -- apart from the on-stage appearance of CEO Steve Jobs -- was an adjustment in its lineup of iPod touch devices. The move could minimize the impact of Microsoft's low-price strategy for its upcoming Zune HD rollout.
Apple dropped the price of the 8GB iPod touch to $199, and said it would offer 32GB and 64GB versions for $299 and $399, respectively -- effectively doubling the capacity at both price points.
Microsoft, by comparison, plans to sell the upcoming Zune HD 16GB for $219.99 and the 32GB version for $289.99. At the 32GB level, that's still about $9 less than the iPod touch, but under Apple's previous pricing structure, the gap would have been more than $100.
Combined with the wide variety of apps available for the iPod touch, the move could make Microsoft's quest to sell music devices this holiday more difficult.
