A few weeks ago, we reported that former aQuantive executive Brent Turner was leaving Microsoft to join Marchex. Turns out that Turner is going to have a pretty easy time recognizing faces around the office.
The Seattle company recently formed its first advisory board, a panel of online advertising experts which includes three former heavyweights from the aQuantive consortium of companies.
They include Clark Kokich, the former president and CEO of aQuantive's Razorfish unit; Mike Galgon, a co-founder of aQuantive who most recently served as chief advertising strategist at Microsoft; and Jim Warner, the former executive vice president of Razorfish's east region.
What's going on over Marchex? Are they trying to recreate the good-old days of aQuantive?
It probably wouldn't be such as half-bad idea considering aQuantive sold out to Microsoft for a cool $6 billion two years ago.
Nick Hanauer
Interestingly, the connections between aQuantive and Marchex going even deeper. In 2007, aQuantive co-founder Nick Hanauer -- now a venture capitalist at Second Avenue Partners in Seattle -- joined the company's board. Since then, Hanauer has accumulated 9.2 percent of the company's class B shares.
Could Hanauer essentially be re-assembling the band under the Marchex umbrella, looking to use some of the aQuantive magic to attack opportunities in the local advertising market?
Perhaps.
But Marchex is not limiting its recent hires to just former aQuantive employees.
We've heard that former Google employee Tom Leung joined the company this week as vice president of product management. Leung -- who worked on the Google Website Optimizer product as a senior product manager -- will report to Matthew Berk. (Berk came to Marchex via the acquisition of his company, OpenList).
Anyway, it will be fascinating to see where some of the other former aQuantive employees land now that employee agreements are ending at Microsoft. We'll keep watching, and reporting, on this trend as it develops.
