New best pals: LOLcats and Dogster form advertising pact |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Who said that dogs and cats can't get along? Dogster -- the 5-year-old online community for dog lovers --has scooped up an online advertising partnership with I Can Has Cheezburger's growing catalog of funny cat photos.
As part of the deal, Dogster (which also runs a Web site for cat lovers called Catster) will sell ads for I Can Has Cheezburger as well as it less popular dog site I Has A Hotdog. The two companies plan to split ad revenue, with TechCrunch reporting that Dogster has been able to command impressive CPM rates of $10 to $40 in part because of its targeted user base and interactive advertising content.
I Can Has Cheezburger's Ben Huh tells TechFlash that they've worked with ad networks in the past, but the deal with Dogster is special because it marks the first deal with a "premium" ad network in a very specific niche.
"We feel that with vertical-specific networks, we can leverage their endemic sales force while not having to build and support our own -- given that our sales people would have to be generalists due to our size and reach," said Huh.
Dogster and I Can has Cheezburger have more in common than their focus on animals. Both have built profitable online content businesses with very little outside capital. And TechCrunch notes that I Can Has Cheezburger's Ben Huh and Dogster's Ted Rheingold are longtime friends who have advised one another over the years.
Meanwhile, I Can Has Cheezburger -- the flagship property of Huh's ever expanding network of comedy Web sites -- is on track to top one billion page views this week. And one of the firm's most recently launched sites -- It Made My Day -- has already topped one million views.
Huh's growing network of humor-related Web sites could make his company attractive to other advertising networks. For example, Huh said that they would be interested in entering other advertising sales partnerships in the home and garden arena, given its cluster of Web sites such as LovelyListing.com, There I Fixed It and Item Not As Described.
