Microsoft offers free software to Web design, development shops |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Microsoft will offer free development tools and software to small Web design and development firms under a new initiative announced this morning.
The program, dubbed "WebsiteSpark," expands on the company's similar BizSpark program for startups and DreamSpark program for students -- this time in a segment of the market where Microsoft and Adobe Systems are increasingly going head-to-head.
Microsoft is hoping to get between 15,000 and 25,000 firms involved in the WebsiteSpark program in the first year, said Mitra Azizira, Microsoft general manager for developer platform evangelism.
One of the Redmond company's motivations, of course, is to get small shops working with its software and tools early in their lifespans -- hoping that they'll stick with Microsoft technologies as they grow. Software licenses offered through the program will include Microsoft's Expression design and development system, Visual Studio, Windows Web Server, and Microsoft SQL Server, among others.
In many cases, the companies in the "Spark' programs wouldn't be able to afford the full slate of Microsoft programs on their own. The initiatives also let the companies avoid Microsoft's notoriously complex licensing deals. WebsiteSpark also will include an online marketplace and Web App Gallery where participating WebsiteSpark companies can promote their offerings to help develop their business.
The WebsiteSpark offer will be available to professional Web design and development shops with 10 or fewer employees. Once they're accepted into the program, the companies will be able to stay involved for up to three years, getting regular software updates and other services. When their time is up, or they decide not to participate anymore, they'll be able to continue using the software.
Microsoft says the only cost for participation is a $100 fee, to be paid when companies exit the program. A variety of Microsoft partners, including hosting companies, are expected to offer discounted services to WebsiteSpark companies.
