Looks like all that money Microsoft is spending on football jerseys and soda cans is paying off.
OK, not really, but new numbers from comScore Networks do show Microsoft's Bing search engine rising to 9.3 percent market share in the U.S. in August, up from 8.9 percent in July, according to reports by Reuters, TechCrunch and others citing a JPMorgan note that provided the numbers in advance of their public release.
Google fell slightly, to 64.6 percent of the U.S. search market, while Yahoo remained flat at 19.3 percent.
The modest increase for Microsoft is the latest sign that the company is gaining new traction since launching Bing and an associated marketing campaign that, apart from sports promotions and internal corporate image-building, includes a significant television and online presence.
The last time Microsoft was above 9 percent in comScore's U.S. rankings was in June 2008, according to our archive of the research firm's publicly released statistics.
Of course, a lot of this depends on which research firm you listen to. Using its own tracking methods, online research firm Nielsen last week reported that searches on Bing increased from 9.0 percent in July to 10.7 percent in August in the U.S., the fastest growth among the top 10 search providers. Google came in at 64.6 percent for the month, a slight increase, according to the Nielsen data.
