It might seem like a spoof, but this site offering Windows 7 for $29.99 to college and university students is authentic, Microsoft confirmed in a blog post today. Neowin has more details on the offer in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, noting that students in other countries will receive similar offers.
"Students in the US can pre-order their copy of Windows 7 in the US starting today and students in the UK can pre-order their copy beginning on September 30th (pre-ordered copies will be available for download beginning October 22nd)," writes Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc in the post. "Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Korea and Mexico can participate in this offer on October 22nd," when the new operating system is released.
The offer ends Jan. 3 in the U.S.
Maybe the move shouldn't be such a surprise. Ars Technica points out that many students can get Windows 7 Professional for free through the MSDN Academic Alliance, noting that Microsoft also offers special student discounts on Office.
At the same time, the move shows just how motivated the company is to get people to use its new operating system. The company started with a series of promotions and price cuts for Windows 7, and earlier this week it came out with a slate of research designed to persuade businesses to make the upgrade.
