Microsoft Tablet dreams reborn? |

Gizmodo today posted a video and details of a Microsoft project called "Courier," a dual-screen Tablet PC that the technology site described as an "astonishing" late-stage prototype.
It does look pretty cool, based on the concept video. But based on past experience -- remember all those leaked Xbox 360 concepts that never came to be? -- it's worth being skeptical about the prospects for these types of things to translate into actual, shipping products.
Bottom line, Microsoft makes lots of prototypes. Along those lines, Ina Fried of CNet News.com followed up with a report quoting sources confirming the existence of the Courier device but noting that "it's just one of several prototypes that has been cooked up as part of a skunkworks project being led by executive J. Allard and a small team of 'Softies."
Allard's reported involvement makes sense given the rumors we reported earlier this year about his work on a revival of Tablet PC concepts. At the very least, it's interesting to see that Microsoft isn't giving up on the idea of the Tablet (a longtime favorite project of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates) despite what Ray Ozzie has said.
We'll be tracking this one closely as it unfolds.
