More details are emerging about the sales battle between the electronic and hardcover versions of Dan Brown's new thriller on Amazon.com. This morning Amazon confirmed that the Kindle edition of "The Lost Symbol" outsold the hardcover edition of the book on its release day this week. Amazon said it was the first time an e-book outsold its hardcover version on the first day of sales.
"The big surprise was that, despite sustained, strong physical books sales, we saw the Kindle edition outsell hardcover editions on the book's release day," Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said in a statement. By the looks of it, the trend continues with the Kindle version topping the hardcover version on Amazon's Mysteries & Thrillers bestseller list.
What does all this mean for Amazon's ongoing tussle with publishers over Kindle? It's hard to say. Amazon will clearly have some evidence that consumers want electronic versions of new releases. But some publishers, who already see Amazon's $9.99 pricing of Kindle editions as a threat, may harden their opposition to releasing books on Kindle at the same time as hardcover. As noted earlier, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's publisher has resisted releasing his memoir "True Compass" -- another highly anticipated book -- in electronic form.
The success of "The Lost Symbol" on Kindle has sparked a lot of buzz in the publishing industry and some snarky speculation about what's behind the trend -- with one person tweeting that the Kindle version of the thriller is popular because "nobody wants to be seen reading it."
