Microsoft exams: Now on sale |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Maybe it's a sign of the rough economy, or a push to get more people trained in its technologies, but Microsoft is suddenly offering discounts of as much as 25 percent on exams required to receive Microsoft certifications. The exams typically cost $125, so the actual savings aren't huge, but it's a notable move nonetheless.
The real value of the certifications have been a subject of intense debate over the years, particularly after a bunch of pre-teens and even a 9-year-old were able to pass exams. But precocious kids and other controversies aside, the certifications are one way Microsoft and other companies build up and maintain a base of technology professionals who are well-versed in (and therefore more likely to choose) their products.
The discounts extend through the end of the year, or "while supplies last," according to the Microsoft Learning site. They are for selected certification exams, not for training or education in advance of the exams, but Microsoft's Jim Glass hinted in a post today that the program will be expanded to other areas.
"Microsoft is providing these discounts as part of a broader campaign designed to help IT Pros and Developers advance their careers through MS technology," he wrote. "In the next few weeks we will announce more offers (around eLearning and instructor-led training) as well as an interactive website designed to provide clear guidance on how to get a job, advance your career or become indispensable in your existing role."
Microsoft has separately been offering vouchers for more basic training in the use of its software, aiming to help people retrain themselves for better jobs.
