Paul Allen
Health concerns last year sidelined billionaire Paul Allen, who was forced to skip the Seattle King County Realtors' First Citizen award due to a medical procedure.
But Allen -- sporting a new beard that's changed a little in color since this iconic 1978 photo -- is healthy again, according to John Canzano's column this week in The Oregonian.
"I'm fine, finally," Allen told Canzano. "I'm much, much better. I hit a few bumps in the road. Your health ... is the most important thing in the world, isn't it?"
The Microsoft co-founder rarely grants press interviews, so Canzano's gushy column provides some additional insights on why Allen enjoys sports teams and his management philosophy.
The Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks may be Allen's best chance for immediate success given some of his bad investment decisions in the past.
While Allen recently sold wireless spectrum to AT&T and saw a positive exit with the sale of biotechnology company BiPar, other investments haven't turned out so well.
His biggest bet to date, Charter Communications, is languishing in bankruptcy. Furthermore, Kirkland-based Digeo -- a big Allen investment over the past decade -- sold for just $20 million.
The 56-year-old bachelor is still ranked as the 17th richest American, with a personal net worth of $11.5 billion. That's down from $16 billion last year, according to Forbes.
And while losing $4 billion is never a good thing, at least Allen appears to have a clean bill of health.
