Paul Allen
A few years ago, I wondered what Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was doing buying up wireless spectrum. Well, today we learned a little bit more.
Bloomberg News reports that the billionaire sold 24 wireless licenses covering parts of Washington and Oregon, including licenses covering Seattle and Portland, to AT&T. The purchase price was not disclosed, though AT&T tells Bloomberg that the newly-acquired spectrum will assist in the roll out of the company's wireless long-term evolution technology.
LTE is a competing technology to Clearwire's WiMax network, which has already been rolled out in Portland. (Seattle is expected to come online later this year). Interestingly, Verizon -- a competitor to both AT&T and Clearwire -- started testing its own long-term evolution network in Seattle last month.
As far as we can tell, Allen never did anything with the spectrum -- which he purchased in 2003. In that regard, the spectrum was more of a real estate play of owning the airwaves.
But with some very large broadband wireless companies looking to roll out service in the Northwest, it may have been a good time to sell. Bloomberg also notes that Allen still owns Block-A spectrum licenses in Seattle and Portland.
During an interview in May with TechFlash, representatives of Allen touted the value of the billionaire's spectrum holdings.
