Beer geeks will get a high-tech treat at this year's Fremont Oktoberfest -- their very own iPhone app. Yep, you read that right. The iPhone -- which has transformed travel, shopping and communications -- can now help beer lovers find the perfect combination of malt, hops, water and yeast. It's almost like a new drinking buddy.
For the first time, organizers of the huge Seattle beer bash have released a free iPhone app. Not only does it offer detailed descriptions of beers on tap -- including brewery location and alcohol content -- but festival goers will be able to rate each Pilsner, Bock and Dunkelweiss right from their phone.
We're just getting excited thinking about it.
Unfortunately, the app doesn't show the nearest bush to pee on or trash can to puke in. But a festival map does pinpoint entertainment stages, food booths, exits and restrooms (where we recommend people go for the above activities).
And, if you're planning to drink that much at the 3-day festival, it might be worth downloading Avvo's Last Call app which tabulates blood alcohol levels and even gives quick access to taxi cab phone numbers.
The coolest feature of the new Oktoberfest app has to be the beer rating guide, a real-time rating system that allows attendees to judge beers on a scale of one-to-five mugs. The ratings will be available for other festival-goers, so they too can see which breweries to check out.
Beer lovers also can easily tweet their favorites to Facebook or Twitter.
The festival will be held Sept. 18 to 20 in Fremont, affectionately known as the Center of Universe.
Organizers of the event have done a good job of tapping social media outlets in order to spread the word in the past, with pages on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.
