Courtney Love -- the widow of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain -- is considering legal action against Activision for the use of her late husband's image and lyrics in the video game Guitar Hero 5. The Guardian reports that Love -- no stranger to controversy -- didn't approve the appearance and is especially upset about features of the game where an avatar of Cobain lip syncs songs from artists such as Bon Jovi.
In a series of profanity-laced Tweets, Love goes off on everyone from lawyers, to former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl to Guardian blogger Everett True who pointed out the irony of an anti-establishment figure such as Cobain covering Bon Jovi songs.
In one response to True, Love writes:
"@everetttrue i have no prob w you calling me names just dont fucking ever think i would sanction such a travesty"
In another message, she writes:
"have fun with your avatars you slimebags, i rant? fuck off i have proof youve simply never bothred to look. so fucking play your videogame."
(Those were actually some of the tamer messages from Love).
Meanwhile, Activision tells the Guardian that Love was very involved in the process of incorporating Cobain's likeness into the game, even picking out virtual wardrobes and hairstyles.
We wrote about Cobain's appearance in the video game a few weeks ago, at the time calling it "creepy." Several TechFlash readers also took issue with the appearance, with Xeno writing:
"Nirvana fans are going to 'blanche' at this because he was against sh*t like this. His lyrics actually made fun of this crap."
