Starbucks debuts apps for finding stores, buying coffee with iPhone |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Starbucks this morning rolled out its first iPhone apps. One, dubbed myStarbucks, is designed for getting information on its stores and products. The other, called Starbucks Card Mobile, replicates a Starbucks Card barcode on the screen of the phone, allowing it to be scanned by the barista for purchase.
Of course, finding a nearby Starbucks location isn't exactly the biggest challenge facing computer science, particularly not in the Seattle region. But using your phone to pay for coffee, now that seems pretty cool -- almost cool enough to make you feel better about the $4 you just dropped on that cup of coffee.
The Starbucks Card Mobile app is being tested at 16 stores in Silicon Valley and Seattle. In addition to using the iPhone to pay for coffee, Starbucks Card holders can use the app to reload their cards with more value, check the balance, and view their transaction history.
The Seattle locations for the iPhone payment trial are Key Tower, 700 5th Ave.; Columbia Center, 701 5th Ave. (ground level and on the 40th floor); the Wells Fargo Building, 999 Third Ave.; 7th and Stewart; 7th and Pike; University Village, 2650 NE 49th St.; and Madison Park, 4000 E. Madison Ave.
The stores for the payment trial in California are 20520 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino; 5180 Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose; 1037-C El Monte Ave, Mountain View; 1380 Pear Avenue, Mountain View; 750 Castro St ., Mountain View; 809A Cuesta Blvd, Mountain View; 2410 Charleston Ave., Mountain View, and 1685-87 Hollenbeck Road, Sunnyvale.
The myStarbucks application includes menu information and a "drink builder," in addition to the store location feature, which works in the U.S. and internationally.
Both apps are free and available for download from the iTunes store. Here's a look at some screen grabs from the apps.
