Seattle photographer Chase Jarvis is winning critical acclaim -- not to mention plenty of sales -- for a new iPhone app, Web site and book called The Best Camera that debuted last week.
The $2.99 iPhone app -- which allows users to shoot, edit and share photos -- is now the third most downloaded paid app in the photography genre, and 16th most popular overall. The book -- a collection of Jarvis' iPhone photographs whose full title is "The Best Camera is the One That's With You" -- is ranked 333rd in Amazon's bestseller list. And the Web site -- an online community where photography lovers can share their favorite mobile shots -- attracted more than 200,000 views in its first 24 hours.
It is fascinating to see an artist take such a focused three-pronged approach to his work, launching on a mobile device, in print and on the Web at the same time.
The Wallingford-based photographer -- who in a blog post last Friday said he'd slept four hours during a 65 hour stretch -- noted that the launch has been "exciting, humbling, scary and energizing all at once."
This three-pronged approach -- what Jarvis calls "The Best Camera ecosystem" -- certainly will be employed by other artists too as they realize the power of multi-platform distribution.
The new iPhone app -- developed in conjunction with Seattle developers Ubermind (The folks behind the popular travel apps from Rick Steves) -- allows users to crop, fade, lighten, darken and add other special effects to photos.
In that regard, the service is like Photoshop or Picnik for iPhone photos. (I have an email into Seattle-based Picnik to see what their plans are for the iPhone).
There's also a social media sharing tool, so users can post the photos to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr or The Best Camera Web site. That's an area where other companies are playing, including ShoZu. (Flickr also recently unveiled its first iPhone app, though it only allows sharing to the Flickr community).
"Overall, I want to continue to celebrate pictures," said Jarvis in a blog post. "I want to continue to grow thebestcamera.com and the visualizer in the app, into a seriously remarkable place for viewing pictures."
Jarvis's next step is to build the The Best Camera community. Beginning today he plans to host a photo contest, where he will give a new iPhone 3GS to the person who uploads the most compelling piece of photography.
Here's more from Jarvis explaining why the "best camera is the one that's with you."
