Usher unveils new iPhone app

With help from Seattle startup Melodeo, international recording artist Usher today is unveiling a new iPhone app called Usher's Top 100. The $2.99 app includes hours of the R&B star's favorite songs.
Those include hits from Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Michael Jackson, as well as songs from Lil' Wayne and others in what the press release says makes the app "a perfect party mix."
Melodeo has been making a big push into iPhone app development for musicians in recent months, an area where Seattle's iLike -- which was recently acquired by MySpace -- also is spending some time.
Leading the charge for Melodeo is Dave Dederer, the former guitarist of the Seattle pop band Presidents of the United States of America.
In fact, the Presidents of the USA earlier this year released their own $2.99 app which includes "lost recordings" and other special features. Altogether, Melodeo has developed more than 40 mobile music apps for the iPhone, but most are compilations such as the "Top 100 Disco Songs."
Individualized mobile apps for bands and musicians, however, are starting to become more commonplace, especially as artists look for new revenue channels.
"Artists need to work their brand every way possible these days," said Dederer, who joined Melodeo as an executive in 2007.
Backed by Voyager Capital, Ignition Partners, Intel and others, Melodeo raised $9.5 million in 2004.
