Advertising giants endorse Microsoft's Yahoo search deal |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
The top executives of Publicis Groupe, WPP, Interpublic Group and Omnicom Group this morning threw their weight behind Microsoft's proposed Yahoo search deal, signing a letter to the Department of Justice from the American Association of Advertising Agencies.
"We believe that Yahoo! and Microsoft’s proposal to combine their technologies and search platforms is good for advertisers, marketing services agencies, website publishers and consumers," reads the letter. "These benefits are too important to wait for. As leading members of the advertising and marketing services industry, we urge the Department of Justice to bring its antitrust review to a speedy conclusion. This proposal enhances competition, and should be allowed to take effect as soon as possible."
Under the deal, Microsoft would handle the underlying search technologies for both companies, effectively giving them a combined 30 percent share of the U.S. search market, potentially creating a more formidable competitor to Google. When the deal was announced in July, Microsoft and Yahoo said they hoped to complete it in early 2010, pending regulatory review.
Bloomberg News reported last month that the DOJ had expanded its inquiry into the agreement, requesting more information from the companies. AdAge.com reported last week that Google has been working behind the scenes to make a case "that the need for scale is not a valid case" in favor of the Microsoft-Yahoo deal.
