Amazon to take its other Kindle, the DX, international next year |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Amazon.com generated a lot of headlines this week by taking its Kindle reader international, giving it the ability to wirelessly download books and other content in more than 100 countries. But the global rollout was strictly for the entry-level Kindle. Now Amazon is confirming plans to launch its other Kindle, the larger screen DX, internationally "sometime next year."
Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener provided no further detail. In the U.S., Amazon is targeting the Kindle DX at university students (for reading textbooks digitally) and newspaper readers (who might favor the larger screen). At $489, the DX is expensive compared to other electronic readers on the market. Perhaps Amazon will cut the price on the DX in conjunction with an international launch, just as it did with the smaller Kindle (which went from $299 to $259).
I guess Amazon wants to see how one Kindle does on the global stage, and make any necessary adjustments, before taking the bigger model international as well.
