Apple: Mac sales top 3 million |

Quarterly sales of the Apple Mac topped 3 million units last quarter, up 17 percent, according to numbers released by the company this afternoon in conjunction with its quarterly earnings report.
It's another positive sign for the personal computer market overall -- although it's not exactly good news for Microsoft, assuming that many of those Mac sales came at the expense of Windows PCs.
Apple said the recent quarter ranks as the most profitable in its history -- no small feat, considering the state of the economy. Overall, the company said revenue for the quarter was $9.87 billion, up from $7.9 billion in the same quarter last year. Net profit was $1.67 billion, compared with $1.14 billion previously.
Here's a notable disparity in sales of the company's flagship devices. Apple's iPod sales were 10.2 million units for the quarter, down 8 percent; while iPhone sales were 7.4 million units, up 7 percent.
Microsoft releases its new Windows 7 operating system on Thursday, and releases earnings results for its recent quarter on Friday morning.
