Clearwire, Comcast and Sprint will each start selling 4G wireless services in Seattle beginning in early December, allowing customers to check email and browse the Internet while on the go. The announcement is part of a larger push by Clearwire and Sprint, which plan to offer service in 25 markets by the end of the year. (Comcast will offer its service in select markets).
In addition to Seattle, the three companies also announced that they will turn on service in Philadelphia and Chicago in the coming weeks.
Sprint and Clearwire also plan to offer service in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, North Carolina and Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas in November. Service will be added in Honolulu and Maui in early December.
Kirkland-based Clearwire already offers wireless Internet service in the Seattle area. But its new 4G service -- branded Clear --provides a faster connection. The company said customers can can expect average download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps, with bursts over 10 mbps. The company's mobile Internet plans start at $35 per month.
Comcast plans to sell its 4G wireless offering under the High-Speed 2Go brand, while Sprint will market its service as 4G.
Clearwire, founded by wireless pioneer Craig McCaw and backed by Intel, Google, Comcast and others, started selling its Clear service in Bellingham earlier this year.
