Deloitte's Larry Hile announces his retirement at the Fast 500 event in Seattle.
Last night, I attended the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 event at the Palace Ballroom in downtown Seattle where 20 companies from Washington state were honored for making the national list. And while it was impressive to see the 5-year revenue growth numbers of the honorees -- including top performer Trubion Pharmaceuticals' 5,501 percent growth rate -- there was another tidbit of news that emerged.
Larry Hile, who joined Deloitte in 1977 and led the technology accounting practice in Seattle for years, announced his retirement. Accountants don't get much attention, unless they botch things up. And not many professionals these days -- especially in the technology field -- stick with their jobs for three decades or more.
During his speech last night, Hile offered a humorous take on how the technology industry had changed over the past 33 years. He recalled the early days of software, cell phones the size of "bricks" and the dot-com boom and bust.
Hile is one of the better known accountants in town, which led some of the attendees at last night's event to speculate that he may become more active serving on corporate boards. Certainly, with all of the new accounting rules and regulations taking effect, someone with Hile's experience will be in high demand in the board room.
Now, on to the winners from last night's event. All told, twenty companies (12 private and eight public) from the state made it into the national Fast 500. That was slightly better than last year's tally when 19 companies made the list.
However, none of Washington's top performers made it into the top 25 national ranking.
Here they are ranked by 5-year revenue growth:
More than 200 percent:
Cobalt Group, WhitePages, F5 Networks, Concur Technologies and Prepared Response.
More than 300 percent:
Pharmacy OneSource, nLight, Itron and A Place For Mom.
More than 400 percent:
eMagin, Seattle Genetics, NetMotion Wireless and Intelius.
More than 700 percent:
All Star Directories, Intellicheck/Mobilisa, Talyst and Tableau Software.
More than 1,000 percent:
Isilon Systems (1,395 percent), Winshuttle (1,460 percent) and Trubion (5,501 percent).
