Microsoft just announced details of plans to integrate Twitter and Facebook feeds into Bing search results, confirming earlier reports of deals with the popular social networks. Here's how the Twitter integration will work, as described by a Microsoft representative via email.
People using Bing will see, in search results, a real-time index of the tweets that match their search queries. Microsoft says the feature will make it easier to "follow what’s going on by reducing the amount of duplicates, spam, and adult content."
Bing users will be able to rank tweets in search results either by post time or by “best match,” a measure that will take into account the popularity of the Twitter user, the "interestingness" of the Tweet (is that a word?) and "other indicators of quality and trustworthiness."
Bing will show the top links shared on Twitter related to a specific search query. Bing will also automatically expand shortened urls to help people get a better grasp of the subject.
More details are available in this Microsoft blog post. The features are expected to be available for preview here shortly.
Microsoft says Qi Lu, president of its Online Services Division, also is announcing "a global partnership with Facebook that will bring public Facebook status updates to Bing search results" during his appearance at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco today. That feature will be available "at a later date," the company says.
