New iPhone app from Glympse looks to safely show locations |
The best places in the region for technology nerds -- including hidden gems and well-known spots not to be missed. Download the map or add your own location.
We've written in the past about Glympse, the Redmond startup that allows mobile phone users to share their movements in the physical world.
Some privacy zealots would be outraged, but Glympse is pushing forward with what it believes are controls to eliminate the creepy (and potentially dangerous) stalker factor.
Today, Glympse -- which had previously been available on Android G1 and some Windows Mobile phones -- introduced a free iPhone application.
Founder Bryan Trussel said the new iPhone app is different from other location-based services on the market in that users can set a specific amount of time that they want to show their whereabouts. (Say a minute, an hour or a day). Glympse also allows for the location updates to be sent to specific individuals via email, text or Twitter updates.
The notices are sent to recipients with a link showing the location of the sender on a map, with TechFlash's Todd Bishop noting in May that he had a hard time getting his friends to open it.
There's certainly a lot of action right now around location-based services, including Google Latitude, loopt, GyPSii and Pelago's Whrrl. Just last week, we reported on the services of Root Wireless, which uses a consumer's GPS-enabled phone to pinpoint dead zones and other problems with the major wireless network operators.
Here are some of the ways that Glympse said people can use the service.
--Let others know you’re stuck in traffic and running late.
--Allow your teenager to check in on Friday night without feeling as if they are being followed
--Share your run, road ride or ski adventure with Twitter followers in real-time.
--Make sure your child at college makes it safely home when driving through inclement weather

Is My Business Out of Control?
You’ve probably heard about internal control, but you may not fully appreciate its importance until something goes wrong: information isn’t getting to you to allow you to run your business, money is missing, or things just feel out of control. What’s important when it comes to internal control and what isn’t? BDO can help you look at your processes and procedures and see where you might be exposed to control breakdowns.
