Google: Um, we got Twitter, too
Well, that didn't last long. For a precious few hours this morning, it looked as if Microsoft had scored a rare victory over Google with an agreement to integrate Twitter feeds into results from its Bing search engine. A few minutes ago, Google announced that it has reached an agreement to do the same in its search results.
"Google and Twitter!! Yay!!" writes Google's Marissa Mayer in a tweet, linking to a post on the Official Google Blog outlining and explaining the search giant's new arrangement with the micro-blogging service.
"We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months," Mayer writes in the post. "That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you'll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information."
At least Microsoft can't be pegged as an imitator in this case.
Microsoft this morning also announced plans to integrate feeds from Facebook into search results. No word yet on whether Google will be striking a similar deal of its own with the popular social networking site.
