Seattle-based Headsprout is rolling out its second online learning program for children. The company is launching a new reading comprehension program for school districts starting this week and for home use in January. Headsprout, which was founded in 2001 and is backed by educational testing giant Kaplan and others, already has a program teaching basic literacy skills in schools across the country.
Headsprout said the new reading comprehension program helps students master critical thinking skills and can be completed in 25 hours. The company sees a market for supplementary online learning programs as schools grapple with standardized testing requirements and benefit from improved broadband internet connections.
Headsprout has raised $19 million in venture capital funding. Investors include Kaplan -- which is owned by the Washington Post Co. and does test preparation, tutoring and career skills courses -- Roser Ventures, and Sofinnova Ventures.
