We've written a lot in the past about hyperlocal news, in part because it is right in TechFlash's sweet spot but also because Seattle has become a bit of a hotbed when it comes to how local media is adapting to the new online publishing paradigm. Now, the folks behind DevHub, the online publishing system, are experimenting with a new project called SeattleAve.com that attempts to bring printed content online.
Unlike what the name suggests, SeattleAve.com is not so much a news aggregation site as it is a place where printed magazines or others can display their content and possibly earn money from it.
At this point, DevHub is working with partners including DList Magazine, BagBliss and local photographers and writers.
DevHub co-founder Mark Michael says many of the publications are not maximized for the Web, and with DevHub's publishing tools the content creators can potentially find new online audiences for their stories or photographs.
At this point, the site -- broken into topics such as Seattle Jobs, Seattle Movies and Seattle Bars --is pretty thin on content. But, Michael, said the end goal is build a service that allows the local print media to use DevHub to release "tastefully monetized versions of their publications.
"Every city has several points of content whether the Giant Nickel to local newsletters in gas stations…that is all valuable content to the web that has not been utilized for new audiences on the web," he said.
But can't a publisher just establish a presence on Wordpress?
Michael said they can, though the popular online publishing tool doesn't offer nearly as many money-making tools. In fact, Michael said they are about 40 "hyperlocal" monetization plug-ins and affiliate agreements that clients can use through DevHub.
If the SeattleAve.com experiment proves successful, Michael said they plan to launch additional local shopping and social networking plug-ins.
