Microsoft nixes 'Family Guy' deal after content proves too raunchy |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
Here's an unexpected development. Microsoft has pulled the plug on Windows 7's high-profile and somewhat controversial sponsorship of a TV special developed by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane. Variety reports that the deal-breaker was the show's contents -- including "typical 'Family Guy' style jokes, including riffs on deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest."
Without going into those types of details, Microsoft confirmed the decision in a statement, saying that the "content was not a fit with the Windows brand." That's a surprising twist, because it was MacFarlane who came under criticism for effectively selling out by explicitly promoting Windows 7 in the show.
"We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of Family Guy, but after reviewing an early version of the variety show it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand," a company representative said in a statement. "We continue to have a good partnership with FOX, Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein and are working with them in other areas. We continue to believe in the value of brand integrations and partnerships between brands, media companies and talent."
Variety reports that the show, "Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show," is expected to air Nov. 8 with another sponsor, not yet named.
