The makers of the Scene It? DVD trivia game are bringing the concept to the Web. Today, Seattle-based Screenlife launched a new online experience that includes more 145 puzzles and quizzes to test one's celebrity and Hollywood knowledge.
On the site you can try to guess movie clips or figure out celebs based on partial images from feature films. The site awards those who correctly answer questions with "Glitz" -- a virtual currency of sorts which allows game players to climb "the Hollywood status ladder." The "Glitz" dollars also can be wagered on games with other players, or traded in for virtual goods.
Essentially, Screenlife is attempting to create a social network around Hollywood trivia. The games are free to play, but one must register to access additional features.
In the future, Screenlife plans to allow game players to create their own quizzes and trivia questions. It also is looking to create fan pages around certain TV shows and movies, a move that would put the company in competition with Seattle area sites such as BuddyTV and Wetpaint.
The company is looking to make money by showing advertisements but also by offering game players the ability to purchase DVDs via Amazon.com.
I better brush up on my Hollywood trivia as it took no fewer than half a dozen questions for me to earn my first "Glitz" points.
Launched in 2002, Scene It? was purchased by Viacom's Paramount Pictures unit last year.
UPDATE: VentureBeat notes that there's an interesting grudge match brewing between Screenlife's new online property and Seattle startup Exponential Entertainment, which just happens to be in the same sector and was started by Screenlife founders Dave Long and Bill Kuper.
