The gaps in Amazon's global rollout of the Kindle |

Amazon.com threw around an impressive number when it announced the new international Kindle -- saying it would be available for shipping to over 100 countries and territories. But there appear to be some holes in Kindle's global footprint. Canada, a big potential market for Amazon's large selection of English-language digital books, isn't on the list. And China, another big market, isn't either.
Amazon's Kindle product page says of Canada: "Unfortunately, we are currently unable to ship Kindles or offer Kindle content in Canada. We are working to make Kindle available to our Canadian customers as soon as possible." It gives a similar statement on China (although Amazon can apparently ship Kindles to Hong Kong).
Our neighbors to the north appear to have noticed their Kindle-less status, with a headline from Canada.com lamenting, "Amazon's Kindle goes global, except in Canada."
Countries that will get Kindles include the U.K., Germany, France, Japan, and India.
Most of the non-U.S. Kindles give the price of New York Times bestsellers and new releases as $11.99, two dollars more than the same titles on U.S. Kindles.
Update: South Korea and Singapore are also not getting Kindles.
But Canada seems to be getting the most attention right now.
The Wall Street Journal says Canada's lack of Kindle may be related to the complex nature of international publishing rights -- or to the possibility that Amazon is planning a native Canadian Kindle of some kind.
The folks at Blog Kindle have compiled a handy list of where Kindle is available -- and where it isn't -- around the globe.
