At an open house for Google's new Kirkland campus today, I bumped into Keith Ito, a Google software engineer in the Seattle area who worked on the turn-by-turn navigation feature for Google Maps on Android devices. The introduction of the feature caused a big stir this morning for its potential to turn the market for portable navigation devices on its head. Ito gave me a quick demo in the video below.
See Ito's post on the Official Google Blog for more details and an official video demo of the feature.
For the record, Ito was essentially mum when I asked about the possibility of adding this feature to Google Maps for other devices, such as the iPhone. (It was something of a personal question, actually, given the fact that I had gotten lost trying to find my way to the new Kirkland campus.)
Stay tuned for a video tour of Google's new facility.
