Walk Score gets Rockefeller grant |
Follow the ups and downs of a new Seattle startup in a series of behind-the-scenes posts by its founders.
The team behind Walk Score, the free service that calculates neighborhood walkability, has been awarded a Rockefeller grant to add some new data to the tool, including public transit options, and transportation costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Seattle-based Front Seat, which designed Walk Score, is also making the service's source code available to outside developers through a new website.
Front Seat didn't specify the size of the Rockefeller grant, but founder Mike Mathieu said Walk Score has 700 real estate partner websites and serves more than 2 million neighborhood walkability scores daily. He said the addition of the transportation data will make the Walk Score tool useful to transportation policy makers and urban planners.
The Walk Score team has been busy lately, releasing an iPhone application in August that uses the phone's built-in GPS to calculate neighborhood walkability based on the user's location.
