Almost every weekday we receive reports from the Securities and Exchange Commission with details about new financing deals. These Form D filings are a treasure trove of information, offering insights on the financing plans of privately-held companies (sometimes before they are ready to share details with the rest of the world).
Only in the past year have these filings become accessible online, changing the way people track information on the venture capital beat. (Before the online records, you had to pay about $40 to have the paper filings faxed or emailed). Now, they are free, and full of juicy details.
We pick up a lot of these filings here at TechFlash, using them as a way to dig a little deeper and report on emerging startups around the region. But we aren't able to cover them all as individual stories. Beginning today, we are going to start sharing more of what we find in these filings.
We're still playing around with the format, so let us know if this is the sort of information you'd like to see. Here's what caught our eye in the past few weeks.
ClearCycle Holding has raised $1.2 million in equity financing from a group of investors that includes Jon Anderson and John Zagula of Ignition Capital, the private equity arm of Bellevue-based Ignition Partners. Also listed as directors in the filing are Douglas Skeen and Peter Hoover. ClearCycle -- formerly known as Valutech -- is led by Stephen Holcomb. The company says that it provides an "integrated set of comprehensive solutions that give you visibility and control across the entire healthcare enterprise." The company says it handles 10 percent of private payer reimbursements in the U.S.
Potholes Reservoir Golf Resort is looking to raises $6.9 million in debt financing. Listed as director of the Othello project is Greg Haynes. Filing here.
Stretta Inc., a Seattle company in the manufacturing category, has raised $162,000 of a $262,000 debt financing round that also includes warrants. The StrettaUSA Web site -- which is under construction -- says the company is working on the UpperHand "ladderless home care system."
Bio Architecture Lab, a biofuels startup led by former HouseValues vice president Nikesh Parekh and created with technology from the University of Washington, has raised a $2 million equity financing round, according to this filing. The 2-year-old company raised $3.3 million of a $6 million round in July, with investor Michael Borrus of Silicon Valley's X/Seed Capital participating. The latest round include investors from Santiago, Chile and Oslo, Norway. The company's Web site says it is now based in Berkeley, California.
R3 Biofuels of Renton has raised $603,000 of a $1.5 million debt financing round. According to the filing, the company is led by former telecom exec Marc Goyette and programmer and former U.S. Army Airborne Ranger Morghan Laswell. The company -- which won the University of Washington Herbert B. Jones Foundation award for "Best Sustainable Business" -- is utilizing technology to transform meat and poultry byproducts into biofuels.
Geodelic Asia, a Bellevue company led by I.K. Lee, has raised $753,000 in equity financing. It is unclear from the filing whether the company is connected to Geodelic, a California company working on location-based services for mobile devices.
Combining technology and soccer is the primary goal of Seattle Sports Sciences, a Redmond company that's raising a $2.5 million equity round for a new device called The SideKick. The machine -- developed over the past four years by former employees of Microsoft, IBM and Philips -- delivers a soccer ball with consistency so that goalkeepers and field players can hone their skills. Major League Soccer's FC Dallas used the device in its training earlier this year, and you can see how it works in this video.
